Against the Odds, a Chaplain’s Journey of Faith, Duty, and Mission is Chaplain Marva Cromartie Nyema’s inspiring story of faith, resilience, and triumph over adversity. Raised in a segregated community in Jacksonville, Florida, she overcame bullying, discrimination, and economic hardships to pursue a life of faith and service. As a trailblazing chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserves, U.S. Air Force, and Air National Guard, she often found herself as the only woman, Black chaplain, or Pentecostal minister in her assignments. Facing racism, gender bias, and even harassment, she relied on her unwavering faith in God to persevere.
